Chapter 16

Name Day

The days flew by in a painful flourish. Each morning Ella woke up, muscles she didn’t know she had hurting worse than the previous day. Their training had grown more intense with the attack on Ennervae. Colonel Nix increased their time in the yard which made her physically sore and Professor Preylina kept them longer in magics which caused her to feel mentally exhausted. The Astral Guard had upped their watches, which meant Ella hadn’t seen Ethan since heading towards the attack. He hadn’t even checked on her, which left her wanting. She had wanted to ask him about Nightmares changing shape, and after her face-to-face with Azvameth she hadn’t really slept all that well.

Ella could tell it was morning although her eyes remained closed. The light streamed in through the window. It was the first day off that the neophytes had since she came to Havenskeep, and she planned on sleeping most of it. The sound of the door opening caught her attention, but not enough to rouse her. If Rhea even thought about disturbing her, she would throw a pillow directly at her head.

As if she’d heard her thoughts, Ella felt the pillow under her head violently ripped out from under her.

“What the-” Ella bolted upright looking for anything within reach.

“Happy name day!” Rhea and Cole’s voices were in unison and excessively loud. Ella stared at them morosely until she saw the bright smiles on their faces. Rhea held intricately wrapped gifts while Cole carried a tray of food, a match sticking out from a pastry.

“What’s all this?” she asked, rubbing her eyes and adjusting so she was sitting up.

“You didn’t think we would forget your name day, did you?” Cole said, setting the tray on her bed. The smell of coffee wafted towards her, and Ella greedily grabbed the cup drinking deeply. It was delicious. “The day after you told me, I told Rhea.”

“We’ve been plotting,” she laughed. The packages rustled as she set them next to the tray.

“We don’t know much about human name days, but one of the human servants helped us with this,” Cole gestured towards the match in the pastry. “He said we light it and sing?”

Ella laughed, “You can skip the singing.”

Rhea raised her hand, sending rippling magic towards the match and watched as it ignited. Ella gasped, “You’re so good at that.”

Rhea shrugged and squealed, “Blow it out before it sets your food on fire!”

Ella closed her eyes for a moment. She couldn’t even think of a wish she had. She was just so thankful for the people standing in front of her. She opened them again and then blew out the match. Cole and Rhea smiled at her taking seats on either side of the bed.

“Open this one first,” Rhea said and handed her a box, “it’s from me.”

Ella ripped the packaging and opened the box to reveal a beautifully decorated dress. It was a wine color with intricate gold and white embroidery on the bodice and down the length of the gown.
